The 4% raise that's really a 1% raise
Your manager just told you the good news: a 4% raise. On a $65,000 salary, that's $2,600 more a year, bringing you to $67,600. It feels like a win. But here's the math they hope you never run.
If inflation that year was 3%, your purchasing power only grew by about 1%. The $2,600 sounds like a reward, but roughly $1,950 of it just keeps you even with rising prices. Your real raise, the part that actually buys you more, is closer to $650. That's the difference between a number that flatters you and a number that tells the truth.
